BLAUER PORTUGIESER

PORTUGIESER

Portugieser-Rebsorte

RED WINES OF THE GRAPE VARIETY PORTUGIESER

From the grape Portugieser a most light red wine is produced, which is characterized by a fresh acidity and light body.

Frequently it will be expanded as a Rosé (Weißherbst). The wine is considered pleasant, tasty, fresh and full-bodied without too much tannin.

Typical flavors: currants, raspberries, strawberries, sour cherries, sometimes even a Pfefferton.

Portugieser is an uncomplicated dinner companion and especially as rosé an excellent summer wine.

origin:

According to a legend, the Portugieser grapes came from the Portuguese city of Porto to the Austrian Bad Vöslau in 1772.

Johann von Fries was said to have planted the first Portugieser grape vinyards on his estate in Bad Vöslau.

From there, the grape spread to Germany, especially in the growing regions Rheinhessen and Pfalz.

On the distribution of the Portugieser within Germany in 1840, Johann Philipp Bronner was involved.

Interestingly, the grape in Portugal is completely unknown, but instead spreading throughout the Danube region.

Therefore, it is the general opinion, that it probably comes from Austria and this area.
