Once planted for coloring, Dunkelfelder in our winery has been an independent, interesting and high-quality red wine and a well-known figurehead for many years.
The small, olive-like berries are very pithy and the quantitative yields are very low. Nevertheless, the elaborate production of the substantial red wines is worthwhile, because the quality is always convincing.
Dunkelfelder grapes ripen on heat-storing terraced gravel soils in KREUZNACHER ROSENBERG. The amount is already determined when pruning the vine and the grapes develop with extensive foliage work and careful defoliation of the grape zone. Harvested very late, the very healthy grapes are destemmed and carefully fermented on the mash for about 10 days. The very tannin-rich young red wine is gently pressed and then matures for at least 12 months in large oak barrels.
Dunkelfelder is a red grape variety. It is a cross between Madeleine Angevine and Färbertraube.
She received the name Dunkelfelder at the University of Applied Sciences in Geisenheim in allusion to the dark color of the juice.
Since 1980, it consists plant variety protection for the grape Dunkelfelder.
This variety is often used for color support in wine blends.
